I had the pleasure of shadowing a very special group of gentlemen from Waterville Rotary. They spent two days passing out dictionaries to third grade students in two local school districts. The Waterville Rotary has been delivering dictionaries for many years. The dictionaries are funded thru the Buck A Duck campaign. Buck A Duck is where people purchase a small toy duck that usually floats down the Maumee River. A cash prize is awarded to the lucky person whose duck reaches the finish line first. As a result of the funds raised from the event the proceeds are used to buy new dictionaries.
Seeing the children's faces light up when they receive their dictionary brought a smile. The smiles, the laughs and the sharing made me appreciate our schools and being able to provide children with a real book in there hands. I spoke with a couple of teachers who said they create their lesson plan around the Rotary's Dictionary Distribution day and use the dictionaries to teach the children about Nouns, Adjectives and verbs. What an experience it was this week. It is nice to know that children appreciate books in todays technology age.
